This is a Medical Officers Service Dress with the rank of Captain.
The Officers Service Peak Cap is of fine wool cloth with a narrow brown patent leather chin strap and a subdued metal Australian Rising Sun badge is affixed to the front.
The tunic is made of Berathea wool cloth with an open collar, two epaulets, and two metal subdued Australian Rising Sun badges affixed to the lapels.
Both epaulets display three metal pips indicating the rank of Captain, and metal 'AUSTRALIA' shoulder titles.
A waist belt of the same fabric has a blackened metal two prong buckle.
There are two box pleated breast pockets with scolloped flaps and two larger lower pockets with straight flaps. A small fob pocket is located on the right hand side of the tunic at waist level.
All buttons are blackened metal each embossed with AUSTRALIA and the map of Australia, and extend down the front of the tunic, all four pockets, and the two epaulets.
On the lower right sleeve are two blue inverted chevrons indicating two years of war time service.

1941 Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC)
This uniform is purpose made for this organisation. The tunic and long pants are of bottle green cotton fabric. Some 1939 Pattern AIF wool uniforms were also used but dyed the same green. This particular tunic was worn by a WW1 veteran (note WW1 medal bar above the left breast pocket) and miniature Ambulance patches to the upper arms indicate that he had served in either the 9th or 10th or 11th Field Ambulance. He has enlisted in the VDC as a Medic / Stretcher Bearer, utilising his previous experience as a Medic from WW1 and posted to a VDC Medical Unit. Khaki slouch hat with wool band and VDC cloth patch sewn to the side and the metal Rising Sun on the turn up. The Tunic has two pleated breast pockets and two larger lower pockets. The stand fall collar has the metal rising sun on each collar. Epaulettes, pockets, and tunic front have the metal Australian buttons. Miniature Field Ambulance patches sewn to both upper sleeves, and below theses are the special VDC cloth patch. Cloth Corporal stripes sewn to the right arm indicates his rank. 1937 pattern web belt with applied green blanco. Web gaiters with applied green blanco. Brown leather ankle boots. |

Lady Muriel Felicia Vere Barclay-Harvey. Lady Barclay-Harvey was the daughter of the 12th Earl of Lindsey, who married Sir Charles Malcolm Barclay-Harvey at Westminster in 1938. Sir Barclay-Harvey was appointed Governor of South Australia in March 1938. Moving to Adelaide, Lady Muriel, founded the Lady Muriel Nurses' Club for servicewomen, and made a habit of visiting numerous Red Cross branches. She also opened the Pioneer Women's Memorial Gardens in Adelaide on 19 April 1941 and launched the corvette HMAS Whyalla, the first ship from the World War II shipyard at Whyalla on 12 May 1941.
