I - GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS.
1. The great expansion of the Citizen Forces of Australia, due to the introduction of Universal Training, and the decision of Parliament that officers as well as other ranks are to be supplied with uniform free, has necessitated the simplification of patterns, and the reduction of articles not needed for training or active service to the minimum. All ranks will realize that the changes made herein are absolutely necessary, not only on account of the great expenditure involved, but also to prevent the work of manufacture, issue, and accounting for uniforms from becoming too complex.
2. These Orders came into force on 1st July, 1912, the commencement of Universal Training in the Militia units.
3. District Commandants and Commanding Officers will be held responsible that no deviations from authorized patterns are permitted.

B -OFFICERS.
Optional Uniform.
When not on parade with troops the following uniform may be worn -
Hat (or cap, S.D.) with coloured band according to arm; white linen collar and black tie, with white shirt; trousers*; brown boots. Officers may also wear trousers when at mess in the evening at camps of training.
Swords will be worn in Full Dress, and on other occasions when ordered.
The revolver, case, and pouch, field glasses or telescope, note books, compass, and whistles will be carried in No. 1, Marching Order.
At balls, dinners, or other entertainments at which uniform is ordered, cap, service dress; jacket; trousers; boots; S.B. belt without sword or frog will be worn.
On other occasions of an official or public character, or when their Excellencies the Governor-General or the Governor of a State are present, evening dress with miniature orders and decorations will be worn. For wearing of Orders, &c., see Appendix III.
* Or breeches with leggings or puttees according to whether mounted or dismounted.
IV - DESCRIPTION OF ARTICLES OF CLOTHING, ETC., ISSUED FREE TO THE MILITIA FORCES
4. All articles not herein described in detail will be made in accordance with the Sealed Patterns, which are kept in the Ordnance Store of each Military District.
5. All uniforms will be supplied free to all ranks of the Militia Forces.
6. Badges of Rank - The rank of Officers is shown by badges as under :-

Badges of rank, except when otherwise ordered, will be worn on shoulder straps. They will be in gilt or gilding metal. The crowns when laid on shoulder cords or shoulder straps are 1 inch broad and 1 inch in height; the stars are 1 inch between opposite points.
General officers' badges are worn in pairs, point of sword to the front and edge of blade outwards or towards the arm.
The sword is 2 inches long and the baton 1/8 inch shorter.
Officers having brevet, local, temporary or honorary rank wear the badges of that rank.
7. Badges, Warrant and Non-commissioned Officers and Special - These are described in Appendix II.
8. Belts, "Sam Browne." - The universal pattern, "Sam Browse," with two braces for dismounted officers and one brace over the right shoulder for mounted officers, without sword frog except when the sword is worn, will be worn by all branches with service dress.
9. Boots - When on duty with troops, the service pattern will be worn. At other times, ordinary tan leather or black boots, plain or patent leather, may be worn with the trousers.
10. Breeches -Khaki cord, universal pattern, as sealed. There are two patterns, mounted and dismounted. On transfer from the latter to the former service or duty, new pattern breeches are supplied.
11. Buttons - Buttons will be of brass of universal pattern. These will be placed as in sealed patterns. The sizes are as follows-

12. Cap, Field Service - Universal pattern.
13. Cap, Service Dress - To be in accordance with the universal sealed pattern, a coloured band, as for hats, to be worn between the welts, and the numeral of the unit in the centre of the front part of the band.
The peak to be plain for all ranks, to drop at an angle of 45 degrees, and to be 1 3/4 inches deep in the middle. Caps to be worn straight on the head.
14. Collars - White linen stand-and-fall collar not less than I ½ inches in height, and black tie, with an ordinary white shirt, or khaki collar and tie with khaki shirt, will be worn by officers as directed in Section III. "Orders of Dress."
15. Decorations and Medals - See Appendix III
16. Gloves - Brown leather, but for evening entertainments white gloves may be worn.
17. Great Coat - Universal pattern as sealed, for all ranks. A waterproof coat of other material may be substituted in special cases, in places within the tropics.
18. Hat - Khaki felt in accordance with sealed pattern. Looped up on left side with hook and eye. Leather chin strap. Cloth band 2 inches wide of following colours -
Army Medical Corps .. Chocolate.
Automobile Corps .. Brown (leather).
19. The numeral of the unit will be worn by all ranks on the front of the hat, and in the centre of the band.
20. Jacket, Commonwealth Pattern, Officers (step collar) - Single-breasted, cut as a lounge coat to the waist with back seam, very loose at the chest and shoulders, but fitted at the waist; waist band 2 1/4 inches wide, military skirt to bottom edge; length of skirt, 13 inches for a man 5 feet 9 inches, varying m proportion to height, step collar, depth of opening about 3 inches, two cross-patch breast pockets above, 6½ inches wide and 7½ inches deep from the top of the flap, box plait in centre 2 1/4 inches wide, three-pointed flap 6½ inches wide and 2 1/4 inches deep, two expanding pockets below the waist plaits at the sides, 9¼ inches wide at the top and 10½ inches at the bottom, 8 inches deep to the top of the pocket and fastened at the top with a line 26 button, flap with button-hole to cover pockets 5½ inches deep, 10~ inches wide, sewn into the bottom edge of the waistband. The top of the plaits of the pockets should be sewn down at the comers in such a manner that on service the pocket can be expanded at the top also; outside ticket pocket in the top of the waistband on the right side; inside watch pocket with leather tab above for chain or strap Four line 32 buttons down the front, the bottom one just below the lower edge of the waistband. To be lined or not, or as required, with lining of similar colour to the jacket. Pointed cuffs. Shoulder straps of same material as the jacket, fastened with line 26 buttons.
21. Jacket, Service Dress - Universal pattern as sealed, for all ranks except officers.
22. Leggings - Brown leather to sealed pattern, for all ranks for whom authorized.
23. Mourning Bands - Officers and Warrant Officers in uniform when in mourning or attending funerals will wear a black band 3 1/4 inches wide round the left arm, midway between the elbow and the shoulder. This is the only mourning to be worn in uniform unless other orders are specially issued, and will not be worn at levees or drawing-rooms except when the Court is in mourning.
24. Puttees - Woollen, khaki, of sealed pattern, 3 yards long. They will be rolled forward on the inside of the legs, and backward on the outside commencing at the ankle. The point is to finish on the outside pointing to the rear. All puttees in a unit are to be rolled and tied in the same manner.
25. Saddlery - Universal pattern as sealed.
26. Spurs, Steel - Spurs, universal pattern, with brown leather straps and guards. Spurs will not be worn on board ship, or by officers inspecting armaments or magazines.
27. Swords and Scabbards - Will be of the regulation pattern.
28. Sword Knots - To be of sealed pattern, brown leather, and worn with all swords. In mounted services to be worn at full length, others rolled round basket of hilt.
29. Trousers, Commonwealth Pattern - Universal pattern, as sealed.
UNATTACHED OFFICERS.
32. Officers on the Unattached List will wear the uniform, &c., of the unit with which they last served on the Active List.
Area officers who did not hold commissions in the Military Forces at the date of temporary appointment as area officers will wear the uniform prescribed for infantry officers, with Commonwealth badges.
33. Officers who did not hold commissions in the A.M.F. at the time of joining the A.I.F. should wear the uniform of the branch of the service to which they belonged in the A.I.F., with Commonwealth badges.
RESERVE OF OFFICERS.
34. Officers of the Reserve of Officers will wear the uniform &c., of the unit with which they last served.
RETIRED OFFICERS.
35. Officers who have been retired, and are permitted to retain their rank, may wear the uniform of the unit with which they last served, with the letter "R" below the badges of rank in similar material to those badges.
Note - Whenever Officers of the Unattached, Reserve, or Retired Lists require to renew their uniforms, the latest approved patterns will be allowed.
V - WEARING OF OLD PATTERN UNIFORM.
49. Full Dress - Distinctive patterns of full dress hitherto authorized may continue to be worn until worn out by those now in possession of them when not on parade with other troops.
50. Articles of uniform which become obsolete by authorized changes' of pattern will be worn until unserviceable.

Officers may supply themselves privately with breeches, jacket, great-coat, and trousers, in lieu of receiving the ordinary free issue, and may, ca production of sub-vouchers, showing evidence of payment, recover the cost of such clothing, not exceeding the published prices. The payment of such sums shall be entered in the record of clothing issues of the unit, as if the articles paid for had been issued in kind.
APPENDIX II
BUTTONS, BADGES, AND DESIGNATION OF UNITS.
Buttons - Will be of universal pattern as sealed, and bear the Imperial crown, the design of the Commonwealth, and the words" Australian Military Forces."
Badges - The badge to be worn on the hat will consist of a coloured band (see para. 21), to denote the "Arm" and a number to denote the unit.
Commanding Officers are permitted to supply, from regimental funds, abbreviations (in brass) of the official designation or territorial title of the unit, or other regimental emblem or badge, and they may be worn on the collar, shoulder strap, flap of the hat, or field service cap. All such additions are subject to approval by Head-Quarters, and the whole of a unit is to be dressed alike.
Officers serving abroad are permitted to wear on the shoulder strap, while with other troops. the word "Australia" in brass or gilt letters.

(3) All non-commissioned officers of Artillery above rank of corporal wear a gun on jacket above chevrons; Engineers wear a grenade.
(4) Chevrons and badges of rank and Geneva crosses will be worn on the right arm of jackets and greatcoats. Badges and chevrons will be worn above the elbow in all cases except the following, when they will be worn below the elbow : -
All badges for warrant officers and badges and chevrons for non-commissioned officers wearing 4-1mr chevrons (Acting staff sergeants-major excepted)·
(5) Four-bar chevrons worn below the elbow will be worn with the point upwards; good conduct badges will be worn below the elbow on the left arm with the point upwards.
(6) The chevrons will be of drab worsted on khaki. Badges of rank, except chevrons, will be of brass or gilding metal.
(7) The position of badges of men of normal dimensions will be as follows: - The point of 1-bar chevrons will be 9 inches; 2-bar, 9½ inches; 3-bar, 10~ inches; and the 4-bar, 11 inches from the top of sleeve.
(8) The centre of the good conduct badge, the 4-bar chevron, & the warrant officers or skill at arms badges worn on jackets will be about half an inch above the point of the cuff; on service dress and other jackets with plain cuffs, the lower edge or points of the 'warrant officers' or skill at arms badges will be 6½ inches; the point of the 4-bar chevron 9 inches; of the 1-gar good conduct badge, 7½ inches; the 2-l~r, 8 inches; 3-bar, 8½ inches from bottom of sleeve.
(9) The lower edge or point of the trade badge, Geneva cross, or badge of appointment, when worn by privates on jackets, will be 9 inches from the top of the sleeve.
(10) Trade badges worn by non-commissioned officers should be affixed with the lower edge three-quarters of an inch above the point of the "V" of chevron, and the artillery gun, or gun and crown when worn, about the same distance above the trade badges The grenade of engineers will be worn immediately above the trade badge.
(11) When a skill at arms badge and a good conduct badge are worn, the former will be placed above the latter.
(12) On greatcoats, the point of the 1-bar chevron will be 9 inches, the 3-bar 9½ inches, the 3-bar 10; inches, and the 4-bar 11 inches from the top of the sleeve, and of the 4-bar, when worn below the elbow, 11 inches from the bottom of the cuff.

At balls, dinners, or other entertainments at which uniform is ordered, cap, service dress; jacket; trousers; boots; S.B. belt without sword or frog will be worn.
On other occasions of an official or public character, or when their Excellencies the Governor-General or the Governor of a State are present, evening dress with miniature orders and decorations will be worn. For wearing of Orders, &c., see Appendix III.

IV - DESCRIPTION OF ARTICLES OF CLOTHING, ETC., ISSUED FREE TO THE MILITIA FORCES
4. All articles not herein described in detail will be made in accordance with the Sealed Patterns, which are kept in the Ordnance Store of each Military District.
5. All uniforms will be supplied free to all ranks of the Militia Forces.
6. Badges of Rank - The rank of Officers is shown by badges as under :-

Badges of rank, except when otherwise ordered, will be worn on shoulder straps. They will be in gilt or gilding metal. The crowns when laid on shoulder cords or shoulder straps are 1 inch broad and 1 inch in height; the stars are 1 inch between opposite points.
General officers' badges are worn in pairs, point of sword to the front and edge of blade outwards or towards the arm.
The sword is 2 inches long and the baton 1/8 inch shorter.
Officers having brevet, local, temporary or honorary rank wear the badges of that rank.
7. Badges, Warrant and Non-commissioned Officers and Special - These are described in Appendix II.
8. Belts, "Sam Browne." - The universal pattern, "Sam Browse," with two braces for dismounted officers and one brace over the right shoulder for mounted officers, without sword frog except when the sword is worn, will be worn by all branches with service dress.
9. Boots - When on duty with troops, the service pattern will be worn. At other times, ordinary tan leather or black boots, plain or patent leather, may be worn with the trousers.
10. Breeches -Khaki cord, universal pattern, as sealed. There are two patterns, mounted and dismounted. On transfer from the latter to the former service or duty, new pattern breeches are supplied.
11. Buttons - Buttons will be of brass of universal pattern. These will be placed as in sealed patterns. The sizes are as follows-

12. Cap, Field Service - Universal pattern.
13. Cap, Service Dress - To be in accordance with the universal sealed pattern, a coloured band, as for hats, to be worn between the welts, and the numeral of the unit in the centre of the front part of the band.
The peak to be plain for all ranks, to drop at an angle of 45 degrees, and to be 1 3/4 inches deep in the middle. Caps to be worn straight on the head.
14. Collars - White linen stand-and-fall collar not less than I ½ inches in height, and black tie, with an ordinary white shirt, or khaki collar and tie with khaki shirt, will be worn by officers as directed in Section III. "Orders of Dress."
15. Decorations and Medals - See Appendix III
16. Gloves - Brown leather, but for evening entertainments white gloves may be worn.
17. Great Coat - Universal pattern as sealed, for all ranks. A waterproof coat of other material may be substituted in special cases, in places within the tropics.
18. Hat - Khaki felt in accordance with sealed pattern. Looped up on left side with hook and eye. Leather chin strap. Cloth band 2 inches wide of following colours -
Army Medical Corps .. Chocolate.
Automobile Corps .. Brown (leather).
19. The numeral of the unit will be worn by all ranks on the front of the hat, and in the centre of the band.
20. Jacket, Commonwealth Pattern, Officers (step collar) - Single-breasted, cut as a lounge coat to the waist with back seam, very loose at the chest and shoulders, but fitted at the waist; waist band 2 1/4 inches wide, military skirt to bottom edge; length of skirt, 13 inches for a man 5 feet 9 inches, varying m proportion to height, step collar, depth of opening about 3 inches, two cross-patch breast pockets above, 6½ inches wide and 7½ inches deep from the top of the flap, box plait in centre 2 1/4 inches wide, three-pointed flap 6½ inches wide and 2 1/4 inches deep, two expanding pockets below the waist plaits at the sides, 9¼ inches wide at the top and 10½ inches at the bottom, 8 inches deep to the top of the pocket and fastened at the top with a line 26 button, flap with button-hole to cover pockets 5½ inches deep, 10~ inches wide, sewn into the bottom edge of the waistband. The top of the plaits of the pockets should be sewn down at the comers in such a manner that on service the pocket can be expanded at the top also; outside ticket pocket in the top of the waistband on the right side; inside watch pocket with leather tab above for chain or strap Four line 32 buttons down the front, the bottom one just below the lower edge of the waistband. To be lined or not, or as required, with lining of similar colour to the jacket. Pointed cuffs. Shoulder straps of same material as the jacket, fastened with line 26 buttons.
21. Jacket, Service Dress - Universal pattern as sealed, for all ranks except officers.
22. Leggings - Brown leather to sealed pattern, for all ranks for whom authorized.
23. Mourning Bands - Officers and Warrant Officers in uniform when in mourning or attending funerals will wear a black band 3 1/4 inches wide round the left arm, midway between the elbow and the shoulder. This is the only mourning to be worn in uniform unless other orders are specially issued, and will not be worn at levees or drawing-rooms except when the Court is in mourning.
24. Puttees - Woollen, khaki, of sealed pattern, 3 yards long. They will be rolled forward on the inside of the legs, and backward on the outside commencing at the ankle. The point is to finish on the outside pointing to the rear. All puttees in a unit are to be rolled and tied in the same manner.
25. Saddlery - Universal pattern as sealed.
26. Spurs, Steel - Spurs, universal pattern, with brown leather straps and guards. Spurs will not be worn on board ship, or by officers inspecting armaments or magazines.
27. Swords and Scabbards - Will be of the regulation pattern.
28. Sword Knots - To be of sealed pattern, brown leather, and worn with all swords. In mounted services to be worn at full length, others rolled round basket of hilt.
29. Trousers, Commonwealth Pattern - Universal pattern, as sealed.
UNATTACHED OFFICERS.
32. Officers on the Unattached List will wear the uniform, &c., of the unit with which they last served on the Active List.
Area officers who did not hold commissions in the Military Forces at the date of temporary appointment as area officers will wear the uniform prescribed for infantry officers, with Commonwealth badges.
33. Officers who did not hold commissions in the A.M.F. at the time of joining the A.I.F. should wear the uniform of the branch of the service to which they belonged in the A.I.F., with Commonwealth badges.
RESERVE OF OFFICERS.
34. Officers of the Reserve of Officers will wear the uniform &c., of the unit with which they last served.
RETIRED OFFICERS.
35. Officers who have been retired, and are permitted to retain their rank, may wear the uniform of the unit with which they last served, with the letter "R" below the badges of rank in similar material to those badges.
Note - Whenever Officers of the Unattached, Reserve, or Retired Lists require to renew their uniforms, the latest approved patterns will be allowed.
V - WEARING OF OLD PATTERN UNIFORM.
49. Full Dress - Distinctive patterns of full dress hitherto authorized may continue to be worn until worn out by those now in possession of them when not on parade with other troops.
50. Articles of uniform which become obsolete by authorized changes' of pattern will be worn until unserviceable.

Officers may supply themselves privately with breeches, jacket, great-coat, and trousers, in lieu of receiving the ordinary free issue, and may, ca production of sub-vouchers, showing evidence of payment, recover the cost of such clothing, not exceeding the published prices. The payment of such sums shall be entered in the record of clothing issues of the unit, as if the articles paid for had been issued in kind.
APPENDIX II
BUTTONS, BADGES, AND DESIGNATION OF UNITS.
Buttons - Will be of universal pattern as sealed, and bear the Imperial crown, the design of the Commonwealth, and the words" Australian Military Forces."
Badges - The badge to be worn on the hat will consist of a coloured band (see para. 21), to denote the "Arm" and a number to denote the unit.
Commanding Officers are permitted to supply, from regimental funds, abbreviations (in brass) of the official designation or territorial title of the unit, or other regimental emblem or badge, and they may be worn on the collar, shoulder strap, flap of the hat, or field service cap. All such additions are subject to approval by Head-Quarters, and the whole of a unit is to be dressed alike.
Officers serving abroad are permitted to wear on the shoulder strap, while with other troops. the word "Australia" in brass or gilt letters.

(4) Chevrons and badges of rank and Geneva crosses will be worn on the right arm of jackets and greatcoats. Badges and chevrons will be worn above the elbow in all cases except the following, when they will be worn below the elbow : -

(5) Four-bar chevrons worn below the elbow will be worn with the point upwards; good conduct badges will be worn below the elbow on the left arm with the point upwards.

(7) The position of badges of men of normal dimensions will be as follows: - The point of 1-bar chevrons will be 9 inches; 2-bar, 9½ inches; 3-bar, 10~ inches; and the 4-bar, 11 inches from the top of sleeve.
(8) The centre of the good conduct badge, the 4-bar chevron, & the warrant officers or skill at arms badges worn on jackets will be about half an inch above the point of the cuff; on service dress and other jackets with plain cuffs, the lower edge or points of the 'warrant officers' or skill at arms badges will be 6½ inches; the point of the 4-bar chevron 9 inches; of the 1-gar good conduct badge, 7½ inches; the 2-l~r, 8 inches; 3-bar, 8½ inches from bottom of sleeve.
(9) The lower edge or point of the trade badge, Geneva cross, or badge of appointment, when worn by privates on jackets, will be 9 inches from the top of the sleeve.
(10) Trade badges worn by non-commissioned officers should be affixed with the lower edge three-quarters of an inch above the point of the "V" of chevron, and the artillery gun, or gun and crown when worn, about the same distance above the trade badges The grenade of engineers will be worn immediately above the trade badge.
(11) When a skill at arms badge and a good conduct badge are worn, the former will be placed above the latter.
(12) On greatcoats, the point of the 1-bar chevron will be 9 inches, the 3-bar 9½ inches, the 3-bar 10; inches, and the 4-bar 11 inches from the top of the sleeve, and of the 4-bar, when worn below the elbow, 11 inches from the bottom of the cuff.
